Plastic Man

Genres: Action, Adventure, Superhero
Publisher: Quality Comics – DC Comics

Vol 1: 1943 – November 1956
Starting in Police Comics # 1 and drawn and written by Jack Cole, Plastic-Man soon became one of Quality Comics most popular character, so it was not long before he was given his own, at first, quarterly book.
With more room Cole was able to express even more freedom and originality.
This came to an end when, for no discernable reason, Cole was abruptly, in one of the more famous acts of comic business treachery, was taken off his creation and then fired from Quality.
It’s said Cole wept openly.
Plastic-Man was then given to a diverse group of other hands with much of the writing being done by Chuck Cuidera, and art by Alex Kotzky, Andre le Blanc, and Dick Dillin.
All of whom did their best to carry on the style of the original stories, but were never a match for Cole.
By the time the series ended in the 50’s in issue 64 with artwork by Dick Dillin, Quality had managed to do what should have been impossible, they made Plastic-Man stiff.

Vol 2: December 1966 – November 1977
Plastic Man (Volume Two) began publishing in 1966 after DC gained the rights to the Plastic Man character from Quality Comics.

Vol 3: November 1988 – February 1989
He was the original stretchable superhero of the 1940s, and now PLASTIC MAN is back in an all-new, all-zany four-issue miniseries. How zany is it? Take the stretchable power of the really long arm of the law, add to it his amazing ability to assume any shape under the sun, throw in a liberal dose of sidekick Woozy Winks and some of the wackiest bad guys in town, shake it all up with the creative talents of some of the best that comics has to offer—then double that and you’ll have some idea of what to expect in the pages of the PLASTIC MAN miniseries. But wacky isn’t all you’ll find in PLASTIC MAN. There’s also slam-bang action, adventure and pathos—all courtesy of writer Phil Foglio, penciller Hilary Barta and inker John Nyberg, not to mention plot and layout assistance from artist Doug Rice, or a series of “reality checks” provided by artist Kevin Nowlan. What’s a “reality check”? Well, it’s a way of injecting a little bit of the real world into the skewed reality of the realm inhabited by PLASTIC MAN, his friends and foes. PLASTIC MAN—you will believe a man can ply.

Vol 4: February 2004 – March 2006
Kyle Baker (UNDERCOVER GENIE, THE COWBOY WALLY SHOW) takes on the pliable Plastic Man in a new monthly series! Issue #1 features a retelling of Plas’ origin as well as a great new tale that pits Plas against his criminal past!

Vol 5: June 13 2018
Meet Eel O’Brian: a petty thug, thief and con artist who runs a strip club. Hey, he’s also dead, at least according to the gang that tossed him out like last week’s garbage. Literally. Don’t worry, though he bounced back from all that, and now he’s trying to make a new life for himself, but the effort is stretching him pretty thin.
