So instead of apparently killing off better characters like Rappacinni and co they could have made this issue better by having Masque and AIM bump off Paul, who Marvel refuses to get that everyone hates. Marvel’s editorial on the Spiderbooks has some fetish of forcing shit characters like Morlun, Philgoblin, Paul and others that nobody will ever warm up to over and over again in some masochistic ritual.

Sooooo ….
Was Flash shooting his shot, or was that all cover for trying to communicate surreptitiously with MJ?
And is that her true reaction to his advance, or her reaction to Venom crawling around in her lung?
Either way, if she pursues a relationship with him, you can put a fork in the character.
She’ll be done.
And it would pretty much blow up the friendship between Flash and Peter.
And watching how they’re writing Paul ….
God knows I can’t stand the way they split Peter and MJ up, but it’s like they’re TRYING to make Paul the most effeminate man possible.
And the sad part is, you listen to female podcasters and they describe Paul, almost to a T as the perfect sort of man.
No toxic masculinity, he cares about others, when MJ breaks up with him he doesn’t flip out or cut her off, he instead wants to maintain a friendship with her …
And yet he comes off so poorly, and that’s beside all the baggage he brings with being the guy that MJ left Peter for.

After reading and enjoying the strong, loving relationship Mary Jane and Peter have as husband and wife in the Ultimate Spider-Man, reading this steaming turd makes me want to puke out of my eyes. She breaks up with Paul (still don’t know why he’s even in a comic panel at this point) and right after leaving that vomit-inducing relationship, she’s going to jump ship to Flash Thompson? Are the writers just trying to turn off the readers so bad that they rage quit this comic? Because that’s been spelling the end of a lot of comic titles in the last few years.
What happened to the Mary Jane we used to love? The relationship they had was so strong and enjoyable back in Spider-Man Vol. 5, and then they went and turned it into a dumpster fire that reeks from one side of the country to the next.

The writing at this point makes it seem that she only got together with Paul because he was there, and Peter wasn’t. If she goes for Flash, she seems to be a woman who HAS to be in a relationship, and that’s never been her.

I don’t think Marvel can do anything with this Character that’d make the audience forgive and forget. Retcon would be their only hope. New universe. I don’t even mind rethreading older stories with a fresh perspective if they do. But Mary Jane is over.

I’ve been hoping against all hope, but sadly, I think you’re correct. The absolute only thing that’s going to save Mary Jane as a character is to undo the damage that’s been done through some kind of multiverse ending crisis or some sort of destructive time displacement that will force something of a re-set to repair what’s happened. Spider-Man and Mary Jane were one of the most iconic romantic pairings in all of comics, and now it’s been reduced to this hot mess. It’s pretty heartbreaking.

While your solution would fit Marvel’s history of forced retcons, I would rather see them do something more realistic. And yes, I realize I’m talking about realism in a world where getting bit by a radioactive spider gives you powers instead of cancer.

Right now, she comes across as incredibly feckless and flighty, leaving relationships as soon as things get tough, undoing the character development she’s had since the 80’s.
In the issue where she tells Peter that she knows he’s Spider-Man, she explains how she has always run away when things got tough, and then later she finally starts to break that pattern by patching things up with her sister and accepting Peter’s marriage proposal.
Although it does kind of give a good writer a way out in salvaging her character.
She wound up with Paul because she didn’t know if she’d ever see Peter again. For all she knew, she was stuck in that dimension for the rest of her life. She was raising two kids, she had the family that she had always wanted, and Paul was … there. He fit into the hole in her life.
But then back in this world, things start to change. She’s not alone anymore, but at the same time she doesn’t want to break up her family.
But when the kids disappear, she starts to realize that Paul was a placeholder for her, and they really don’t have that much in common aside from their shared time in his dimension. As time goes on, that forced dependency begins to subside, and she realizes that he’s not the one for her.
Does this lead her back to Peter?
I would argue that it clears the path, but now it’s up to him. And for his sake, I hope he doesn’t go back to her.
Make her fight for him. Make her prove that she’s serious about getting back together with him, and make her do the work.

What you said right at the end there, that would be f*cking awesome, and it would require some decent storytelling on behalf of the writers, which would be a major step up compared to the hot mess that passes for writing that MJ has been involved with the last few years.
That would be a most welcome change of pace, especially as far as Spider-Man stories go. For years and in every media for and incarnation, as you mentioned, Peter has always been the one fighting for his relationship with Mary Jane, while, as you also mentioned, she has always been the one to end or walk away from it. Which is why it really pissed me off to see her break up with Peter the way she did after everything he went through to save her and Paul from that hellish dimension she was trapped in; it was the lowest thing ever done to Peter relationship-wise. So, now that she’s broken up with Paul, for all the right reasons I think, it should definitely be up to her to fix her relationship with Peter, because at this point, it’s probably the only thing that’s going to save her as a Marvel character. Even her own aunt correctly guessed that it was MJ who ruined her relationship with Peter. And it would actually be quite cathartic to see her go through some kind of emotionally wrecking trauma and realize that Peter’s the only one she’s truly loved, then try and get back together with Peter only to find that he has moved on with his new hot alien girlfriend. I know it sounds petty, but it would be some nice emotional payback for how dirty she did Peter.

Because Peter and MJ have always been so deeply tied together I feel like theyโ€™ll even if later on try to bring them back together but honestly sheโ€™s fully lost on me now. I know Peter is getting it on in space but thatโ€™s obviously just feels like a fling but now Iโ€™d love if they just said hey letโ€™s have Peter move on. Even if you want to say the writers ruined her THATS THE PROBLEM they ruined her so now reading it for what they give us iโ€™d rather her and peter just stay apart.
