Harvey’s last try at Code approved watered down “horror.”
Alarming tales is made up almost entirely of stories taken from previous pre-code Harvey horror comics, only they have been altered, with new dialog in the word balloons and some new art so as to no longer offend the Comic Book Code of Approval.
For instance, in one called “Clean as a Whistle” which first appeared in Black Cat 49, a husband kills his domineering and cleanliness obsessed wife by filling her bath tub with acid.
In the altered version that appears in issue 5 the text changes the wife to his sister, and the last half of the last page is changed so that instead of murdering her, he steals all her furniture and everything else in her apartment leaving it “clean as a whistle.”
There were also some new stories as well.
