Thrusting themselves into the lonely life of Kevin Matchstick are the mysterious vagabond sorcerer, Mirth; the evil Grackleflints, with their poisonous elbow spurs, and a power that runs through Kevin’s body and spawns from a struggle as old as time itself.

Vol 2: July 1997 – October 1999
This issue, Mage: The Hero Defined #0, is titled the “Second Interlude.” It takes place after the series Mage: The Hero Discovered, and also after the “First Interlude,” which was published inGrendel #16-19. It takes place before Mage: The Hero Defined #1.
Kevin Matchstick has continued to gain experience as a warrior against the forces of darkness. Here, he has a more carefree attitude than in the first Interlude. He is searching the Grand Canyon for some “nasties” and runs into Joe Phat, a fellow avatar. Joe and Kevin fight an ogre-wight and destroy it through teamwork. They bond quickly and decide to join together in their struggle against their eldritch adversaries. This story sets up the partnership that they continue throughout the rest of The Hero Defined proper.
It is not necessary to read the Second Interlude in order to understand the rest of The Hero Defined, in terms of plot.

Vol 3: July 2017
MATT WAGNER returns with the third and final volume of his epic fantasy trilogy MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. This long-awaited conclusion follows the adventures of the reluctant everyman hero Kevin Matchstick, who, after encountering a shaggy and beguiling wizard, discovers he is the reincarnation of the legendary Pendragon and able to wield the power of the mystical weapon, Excalibur. The story picks up several years after the fateful climax of THE HERO DEFINED and finds Kevin beginning to once again doubt the virtue of his actions and the course of his destiny.
