This issue alone undone the crap Zeb did to MJ as a character and show that mj still love peter , just her with beaming eyes showing attention quick to peter , when he mention if they should catch up and then putting her head in his shoulder without a notice that she still have that love for him, especially when she say that for now we friend again, but for everything else we see how it go/happen ( that statement alone say that eventually if the star Aline again , we be back together !!) that give hope for the future to built this back up stronger than ever.

Mary Jane and Peter have been separated more than once throughout the history of the Spider-Man comics, and while that always disappoints me, it’s not something I’m unused to. But what Zeb Welles did, took one of the most iconic romantic pairings in all of comics and basically crapped all over it, was, in my opinion, the worst thing ever done to Spider-Man. Even worse than the deal with Mephisto that ended their marriage. So, seeing this issue after a crime against comics that had gone on for far longer than it had any right to be, definitely made me the happiest I had been to read Spider-Man in the last few years.

The road to recovery for Peter and MJ’s relationship to what it’s meant to be is still probably quite a way off, but this is definitely where it needs to start again.

The thing that issue did in my mind was give a rational, realistic explanation for MJ’s behavior towards Peter during Wells’s crappy run.
Even though she doesn’t come out and say it, her description of herself as her nerves jumping every 10 seconds, and all her pain coiled up and lashing out at any trigger, it’s obvious she’s suffering from PTSD.
Ewing did an interview in which he stated flat out that MJ and Paul had a trauma bond, so he clearly sees their relationship for what it was, and hopefully will be allowed to take her in a positive way.
But I swear to God, if Lowe decides to Peter Parker MJ, deciding that she’s only relatable when she’s miserable …

Aside from Susan Storm and Reed Richards, is there any other couple in Marvel Comics that’s as iconic as MJ and Peter? Because I don’t think so.

Scott Summers and Jean Grey, maybe.
But Peter and MJ are just a different beast, probably because their pairing has been denied for so long.

I’m a bit iffy when it comes to Scott Summers and Jean Grey, personally. To be perfectly honest, I was actually a team Scott/Emma fan. But like you said, Peter and MJ are a different matter altogether. Those two belong with each other, and it’s been far too long since that was allowed to happen.

That is an absolutely perfect example. Thank you for reminding me. Even Scott/Jean or Scott/Emma doesn’t really compare as far as iconic X-Men couples go, and they are definitely one of the most iconic power couples in all of Marvel Comics.

They should go do a double date with Peter and MJ, once Brad Winderbaum have clean Marvel’s editorial.

You’re preaching to the right choir on that one. There aren’t many couples in all of comics that are as iconic as Peter Parker/Mary Jane and Lois Lane/Clark Kent. Maybe Batman/Catwoman and Invisible Woman/Mr. Fantastic, but I don’t think even they rival the first two.

I like that they choose a new look, I think it’s wrong to show the red hair, it won’t take long for someone to make the connection…does Captain Alliance need (or even just know) to knock?

I don’t think knocking is a concept in his part of the galaxy. Remember, licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets.

Okay, so these writers in a single issue have managed to undo the crapstorm that Zeb Wells (may his script pages burn in the 9th level of Dante’s inferno) wrought upon Mary Jane Watson’s character. It encapsulates and explains so well what she went through and why she did what she did, and on top of that, she APOLOGIZES to Peter for hurting him.
If they do wind up back together (please, God), this issue laid the proper groundwork for it, rather than Peter just taking her back with her past behavior swept under the rug.

That being said, I do have a couple of issues here:
First, MJ telling him that friendship isn’t a consolation.
If you have someone that you have romantic feelings for who tells you that your romantic feelings are not reciprocated, but that they still want to have you in their life, that is absolutely a consolation prize. It is the literal definition of a consolation prize.
a prize given to a runner-up or a loser in a contest”.
For Peter especially. His romantic relationship with Mary Jane was ended, by her, in an unexpected and rather harsh manner. And she herself admits that she took things out on him unfairly. So to sit there and say, “hey, we can still be friends, it’s just as good as being together!” Nope, sorry. That’s completely disingenuous, and dismissive of his feelings.
She had time to process the end of their romantic relationship, even convincing herself that he was dead. He had it dumped on him.

Second: Peter telling her that she never has to apologize to him, even cutting her off as she acknowledges that she hurt him.
No. I love MJ, but no one is infallible. She has to be accountable for her actions, and her being willing to acknowledge what she did is a huge step.

Really loving the direction this is going in (And I love how she acknowledges that she and Flash talked themselves out of a relationship right out of the gate). So glad that Marvel has found a writer who actually CARES about MJ.

I agree with what you’re saying right here 100%. They may not be together now or even soon, but this is definitely a good step in the right direction. In hindsight, and I’m just giving Peter the benefit of the doubt here, when it comes to him telling MJ she never has to apologize to him, I think that’s Peter’s way of saying he could never hate or have negative feelings toward her because that’s how much he loves her. Granted, I can’t stand that kind of crap myself, especially since he had every right to be angry at her, but I think MJ is the one person in his life that he can never bring himself to hate or be angry at, no matter what. Personally, I think the writers did that part not only to continue portraying Spider-Man’s inability to hold a grudge, but to lay the groundwork of them burying the hatchet with Paul’s corpse. This way, it’ll probably be much easier for them to write Peter and MJ getting back together.

I think this issue did a lot to save MJ’s character, especially after Zeb Welles did so much to ruin in the last couple of volumes. She recognizes that she did Peter dirty, even went so far to explain why she knew her relationship with Paul was a mistake, and apologized for it in order for them to both move on. I think this little talk they had is a helluva lot better than either of them going on and acting as if what MJ did, how she treated him, never happened. If that were to be the case, I would have been extremely disappointed with the writing. Here, Mary Jane acknowledges what she did, says she’s sorry, and now they’re both ready to move forward with how their respective paths take them, which may even end with them together again. Fingers crossed.

It also helps that Mary Jane broke up with Paul before his death, and now we know there’s no lingering feelings of guilt or anything like that that will hinder Mary Jane’s life in general, especially if that leads to her getting back together with Peter.

And the way I see it personally, it wasn’t just Mary Jane apologizing to Peter in this issue; this was the writers apologizing to the fans. They had MJ explain why she did what she did, why her relationship with Paul was a mistake, and it the issue ended with a clean slate to move on with. Now, maybe with Zeb Welles’ mistake being truly dead and gone, Marvel Comics will see an uptick in sales and popularity with Spider-Man’s comics.

Spot on.
I recall reading an interview with the writer for this series in which he flat out stated that MJ’s and Paul’s relationship was a trauma bond. When I read that, I knew that he was on the right track.
That being said, Nick Lowe is still the editor of this book, so I think there’s a limit to how far he’ll let MJ and Peter’s relationship progress.

First things first: Paul Rabin is officially dead and I couldn’t be happier! I defy anyone on this planet to explain to me why I would be wrong to feel that way. Even when that priest was reciting Matthew 7:1, all I could hear was George Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”.

Can anyone name me any contribution the douchebag from another world has made to the Marvel Comics other than soiling everything he touched? The only positive thing I can think of is during that Superman/Spider-Man crossover during that blind date with Power Girl and it was shown what a simp he truly was.

Good-bye Paul! May he and his nasty man-bun never come back to haunt this universe again.

Moving on. I’m glad to see that Peter and MJ finally got that heart-to-heart that had been missing for far too long. This was something I feel needed to be done and things needed to be said before MJ and Peter’s relationship could ever be repaired. MJ did wrong by Peter by breaking up with him the way she did, and what she said here was the long-awaited truth. And I’m really happy that she admitted out loud to Peter that her relationship with Paul only worked because of the fact that she was stuck on a doomed planet and only stayed with him for the sake of those kids. If the writers just suddenly put Peter and MJ back together without any of this being said, I would have been disappointed. So, I give a lot of points to the writers in this issue for doing what I feel was a very good leap to restoring MJ’s character. They may not be together right now, but this is a very good start to the road to the most iconic couple in Marvel Comics getting back together.

Peter is way too good to be true as far as relationship material goes as far as I’m concerned. He always puts everyone ahead of himself and he’s just so damned forgiving I actually find it annoying. While I find that to be one of his most outstanding qualities, especially where his relationship with MJ is concerned, I think there are instances where he needs to put it on the shelf and zip his lip. Sometimes, some people simply need to die.

Case in point, that conversation he had with Venom. Granted, Venom bringing up Gwen Stacy was a low blow, and I would have wanted to slug that extraterrestrial ring worm to another zip code as well, but I truly feel that for the first time ever, Venom made a good call and killed someone for the right reasons. Torment was never, ever, going to stop. He had already wiped out whole families, generations, with the efficiency and brutality that would make a warlord jealous. If there was ever someone who didn’t simply deserve to die, but needed to die, it was Torment. And we all know that Spider-Man would never have crossed that line, so someone else did it for him. And, personally, I think that Venom actually saved a lot of lives doing that.

I really like MJ’s new look as Venom. It shows her really coming into herself, accepting her new situation and going down her path. I think this is probably the best show of her making her own way as a character in the last few years. And not even ten seconds after embracing her new role as Venom, she gets pulled into a galaxy-saving adventure. For the first time in a long time, I feel like saying, “Good luck, Mary Jane. Kick some ass!”

I know I’m going to take a bunch of heat for this, but I never really despised Paul as a character, but as a plot device that was created to keep Peter and MJ apart.
He reminded me of that girl who Ross started dating on Friends because he was convinced that nothing would ever happen with Rachel.
Audiences hated her, not because she’d done anything wrong, or was bad to Ross, but because she was standing in the way of the relationship that they were clamoring for.
Paul’s biggest sin was the MJ chose him over Peter.

I reserve my wrath for Nick Lowe and Zeb Wells.

As to your point of Peter being too forgiving, I couldn’t agree more. The fact that he brushes off how MJ hurt him, even as she’s acknowledging what she’s done and is trying to apologize for it …
Nah Pete, that’s how women lose respect for you and leave you in reality, when you don’t have standards and boundaries.

No hate to be found here. I realize that it’s not the character’s fault for doing exactly what the writer crated that character to do, but it’s because the character is fulfilling that specific role that makes people hate them. I mean, the character can’t help it they suck or are insufferable and any other negative traits that may be associated with them because that’s exactly how they were written.

I agree with what you’re saying about Zeb Welles and Nick Lowe, they most certainly created a lot of bad feelings and probably hurt their own careers by messing up characters the way they did and delivered very crappy stories with them.

Peter’s ability to forgive so easily isn’t just limited to his love life, I feel. As a hero and a person in general, I feel like he is forgiving, compassionate and empathetic that it’s almost detrimental. There are way too many bad guys with a body count of innocent people, like Kraven, Kingpin, Mr. Negative, Tombstone, Morlun and Doctor Octopus are just the few I can think of, and the world would be better off with them in a grave instead of walking around. That’s why I think the Marvel Universe needs somebody like Frank Castle as the great equalizer. And there are times, like in this issue, for example, Peter really needs to stow his “No Killing” rule and look at the bigger picture around him.

If the writers really wanted to do something fun, original and probably add a new layer to Spider-Man’s character, they should do an arc where he just absolutely stops taking crap from everyone, villains and heroes alike. The villains are never going to stop being what they are, and way too many people in the hero community treat Spidey like a bad joke, despite all the times he’s saved the city, the country, the world in general. Like maybe some kind of psychic, or a demon or interdimensional being just robs Peter of his sense of compassion or warps his personality to make him edgier and meaner, and people see exactly what he’s capable of when he’s done holding back and taking crap. And then the other heroes have to get together and try to bring the old Spider-Man back when they realize that maybe they took him for granted. That would be awesome, as far as I’m concerned.

The issue where Peter went to Riker’s, took off his costume and beat the crap out of Kingpin for coming after his family was right in this vein, and so epic.
Another great example of how Peter can be a fully functioning adult and STILL be relatable and have good storylines.

That was actually one of my favorite scenes with Spider-Man, ever. Which was another reason why I was so pissed when they undid everything from Spider-Man making that deal with Mephisto. I felt like they undid one of the most badass moments in all of Spider-Man comics. Thankfully, with this new Spider-Man: Brand New Day thing they got going on, they confirm that moment was never taken away, just Spider-Man public identity and marriage.

They absolutely need to do another scene or moment like that with Spider-Man, just showing him being such a badass that it won’t be forgotten.

Yeah, I remember reading that. While I don’t know a thing about why their marriage ended the way it did, not my business and maybe Zeb has every reason possible to be heartbroken, but after this travesty he inflicted on Spider-Man, he needs to go back to just writing for Robot Chicken. At least then when he embarrasses and makes an ass out of beloved icons, it’s actually funny and entertaining. What he did with Peter and MJ’s relationship was stupid and aggravating.

Well, I can’t say that I don’t blame Zeb for being heartbroken and angry because that is a low, dirty thing to do, but still, his personal issues, tragic as they are, I am totally sympathetic to that, has no bearing on how he conducts himself professionally. I don’t know Zeb Welles personally, only what he writes, and what he has written, what he did to the Spider-Man comics, is pure garbage, and that’s exactly what I judge him for.

He had no business ruining Spider-Man for the rest of us by taking out his frustrations on the comic or trying to force the rest of us to feel his pain. That’s not what people pay money for.

I’m willing to give Zeb a little bit of grace because of the turmoil in his personal life, but that’s when Rowe should have reeled him in.
Plus, for all the damage he did to MJ’s character, he laid out the opportunity for a good writer to rehabilitate her image.
So a kind of “pay it forward” scheme.:)

I won’t deny that there’s a goodly amount of appeal in what you’re saying right here. With MJ becoming the new Venom and making the identity her own, this presents a golden opportunity to not only recover from the damage that Zeb Welles inflicted on her character, but for her to go out and become a superhero of her own, and all the character development, challenges and triumphs that come with that.

I think that’s something we haven’t seen in a very long time, especially with a long-established character: seeing someone else’ journey of becoming a hero. I will not count the days Mary Jane spent as Jackpot, because of all the obvious reasons besides the crappy writing. Seeing her merge with the Venom Symbiote, try to become a hero while balancing her own life, all the challenges that Peter has had to learn to deal with, and is still dealing with, will be a brand new perspective for her.

I just wish she had the sexy Venom look during that recent arc with Black Cat where she and Felicia were in the Negative Zone. I feel like there’s so much potential for them doing another stint together now that they are both in the very exclusive “Peter’s Exes Who Became Superheroines” Club.

Yeah, this is probably the best thing for MJ right now. I think this is the perfect symbolism of MJ coming into her own as a character, being something more original, instead of being a knock-off or a cling-on of someone else.
