Well, I’m just spit-balling here, but maybe instead of a fake/imposter/clone that’s simply out to replace Spider-Man, which, as you’ve mentioned, has been done to death, maybe the writers will use this as an opportunity to showcase how important the real Spider-Man and Peter Parker is. They’re already kind of featuring that in the Black Cat comic right now. I think this’d be a good way to showcase what an important character Spider-Man actually is and for certain other Marvel character to realize how much they undervalue him.

Jeez, are we back to clones again? Please tell me that this isn’t Ben under the mask, or impersonating Peter.
Or he’s still hiding out from the beating he got. And we already did that arc with Ben taking on the mantle of Spider-Man while Peter was laid out by the U-foes.
Maybe this could be a good opportunity as far as writing goes? I mean, what Zeb Wells did not that long ago with the whole Ben Riley clone thing wasn’t exactly stellar. Spider-Man has some of the most iconic stories and best use of the whole clone theme than most other characters in comics, and lately it feels like they haven’t been using that whole theme very well.
With this Not-Spider-Man and Not-Peter-Parker around, and they are definitely going to be messing things up, while the genuine article is taking a sojourn through outer space, maybe some people back one Earth (like Mary Jane) will finally realize how important he was, both as a superhero and as a person in general. Maybe they’ll finally learn that they undervalued him then realize they need him back. And, hey, maybe Spider-Man will find people who actually appreciate him while he lost in space.
I realize I’m probably being overly optimistic with such high hopes, but it’s pretty much the only thing that’s kept me reading Spider-Man these last few years.
The problem is that the cathartic moment of Peter shutting the door in Mary Jane’s face is negated by the fact that it wasn’t actually Peter that did it.
I swear, if they have Peter going back to MJ issuing a groveling apology for something that he didn’t do …
Huh, good point. It took you saying that for the disappointment to set in. I realize I’m still probably being unrealistically optimistic, but maybe she’ll come crawling back to him instead?
Like I said, maybe this is the opportunity for that narrative we sometimes see in certain comics, cartoons and tv shows where an underappreciated character is no longer around, sometime replaced by someone else, and then everyone realize how badly they need that character in their lives. That would be a good set up for Mary Jane to go back to Peter, instead of the other way around.
One can only hope.
But most likely, they’re going to have her acting cold and aloof, saying that they can’t be together because once again, the craziness that is life is too much for her….

Aw, man! Right when I thought they were doing something new and different with Spidey, they throw in this curveball. I was hoping we’d finally see a somewhat edgier Spider-Man who’s sick of being everybody’s whipping boy that’s never taken seriously. It was nice to see Peter not taking anyone else crap for a change, especially with Tombstone. Everyone seems to forget that Spider-Man’s powers actually make him extremely dangerous, yet everyone, even some of the writers, still treat him like he’s some bush league punk.
This is exactly what Zeb Wells should have done for Spider-Man during that whole Gangwar Arc, but I don’t think anyone can accuse Wells of making smart decisions. I mean, let’s all be honest for a split second here: if Spidey wanted, he could probably snap Tombstone into pieces. Hell, he once broke into prison with his costume off and literally slapped Wilson Fisk around like a little bitch in front of everyone.
As far as I’m concerned, this here, and how he handled MJ in the last issue, has been long overdue. I’m just bummed that it seems like it’s not actually Spider-Man or Peter Parker acting this way.

This reminds me of that arc in Nick Spencer’s run where spider-man and peter are split personalities
How many times has the Fake Spiderman trope been done at this point? I mean they are just recycling something that’s been done before.

Unfortunately I think Ben’s impersonating Peter and Spider-Man might just be Kaine. I think the real Peter has fucked off to space.
